NEET Biology Chapter 2: Biological Classification | NCERT Notes & Five Kingdom System

🧬 NEET Biology Chapter 2: Biological Classification – Complete Notes (NCERT Based)

✍️ Introduction

Biological Classification is Chapter 2 of Class 11 Biology (NCERT) and a very important chapter for NEET. Every year 1–2 questions are asked directly from this chapter. In this chapter, we study how living organisms are classified into different groups based on their characteristics.

📌 Why Biological Classification is Important for NEET?

  • Direct NCERT-based MCQs

  • Repeated questions from Five Kingdom Classification

  • Important for Microbiology & Cell Biology

  • Easy scoring chapter if concepts are clear

🔬 What is Biological Classification?

Biological classification is the scientific method of grouping organisms based on similarities and differences.

Objectives:

  • Easy study of organisms

  • Proper identification

  • Understanding evolutionary relationships

🧪 Five Kingdom Classification (R.H. Whittaker – 1969)

R.H. Whittaker classified organisms into five kingdoms based on:

  • Cell structure

  • Body organisation

  • Mode of nutrition

  • Reproduction

  • Phylogenetic relationship

The Five Kingdoms Are:

  1. Monera

  2. Protista

  3. Fungi

  4. Plantae

  5. Animalia

🦠 Kingdom Monera

  • Prokaryotic organisms

  • No true nucleus

  • Examples: Bacteria, Cyanobacteria, Mycoplasma

Key Points for NEET:

  • Cell wall usually present

  • Reproduction by binary fission

  • Nutrition: Autotrophic / Heterotrophic

🧫 Kingdom Protista

  • Eukaryotic and mostly unicellular

  • Examples: Amoeba, Paramecium, Euglena

Important Facts:

  • True nucleus present

  • Mostly aquatic

  • Reproduction: Asexual & Sexual

🍄 Kingdom Fungi

  • Eukaryotic and multicellular

  • Cell wall made of chitin

  • Examples: Yeast, Mushroom, Rhizopus

NEET Focus:

  • Saprophytic nutrition

  • Asexual spores (conidia, sporangiospores)

🌿 Kingdom Plantae

  • Multicellular and autotrophic

  • Presence of chlorophyll

  • Cell wall made of cellulose

Includes:

  • Algae

  • Bryophytes

  • Pteridophytes

  • Gymnosperms

  • Angiosperms

🐾 Kingdom Animalia

  • Multicellular and heterotrophic

  • No cell wall

  • Complex organ systems

Key Feature:

  • Sexual reproduction is common

  • Well-developed nervous system

🧠 Important NEET Tips (Biological Classification)

✔ Focus on NCERT tables & examples
✔ Remember differences between kingdoms
✔ Revise characteristics-based MCQs
✔ Practice previous year questions

📘 NCERT-Based MCQs Practice

👉 Expect questions from:

  • Kingdom characteristics

  • Cell wall composition

  • Mode of nutrition

  • Examples-based questions

🎯 Conclusion

Biological Classification is a high-scoring and concept-based chapter for NEET aspirants. Strong understanding of five kingdoms can easily help you secure marks in Biology.
